# Choices on usual menus

October 23, 2026 · API

A usual menu, marked `scope: "chain"`, now carries each item's choices in `optionGroups`, on `POST /v1/menus` and the MCP `menu` tool. Before, it had names, sections and photos only. See [POST /v1/menus](https://developer.layout.link/reference/api#post-v1-menus).

## What changed

- **The same shape as a location's own menu.** Each group has `name`, `required` and `options`, and `moreOptions` when a group has more than 24.
- **No prices.** An option on a usual menu never carries a price, because prices are each location's. `pricesUnavailable` is still `true`.

## Why it matters

You can show a person what they can choose for a dish at a location Layout has not read yet, on the first call.

## What to do

Nothing, if you already read `optionGroups` on a location's own menu. Show no price for an option on a usual menu.

## Breaking changes

None. `optionGroups` already exists on menu items; it now also appears on a usual menu.
